The salt content in marine air is 10–20 times higher than on land, accelerating corrosion of metal filter components. At the same time, high humidity causes air filter paper to absorb moisture and harden, sharply reducing filtration efficiency. If not handled promptly, this may lead to engine “surge,” resulting in a 5–10% drop in power output.
Marine fuels often have high sulfur content and contain numerous impurities. Fuel quality also varies significantly from port to port, which can lead to gum and asphaltene deposits. Traditional fuel filters struggle to cope, frequently clogging and causing injector wear. A single repair can cost hundreds of thousands of RMB, and in severe cases, may cause main engine shutdown (downtime losses can exceed RMB 100,000 per hour).
Filter media is made of glass fiber with a PTFE coating, which blocks more than 90% of salt spray corrosion. The PTFE coating also provides hydrophobic properties, preventing filter paper from absorbing moisture and clogging. Filtration efficiency remains above 99.9% for 0.3 μm particles.

Spare Parts Strategy: Based on voyage duration (e.g., a trans-Pacific route of about 30 days), it is recommended to prepare 2–3 sets of consumable filter elements (such as fuel fine filters and air filters). Spare parts should be clearly labeled with model numbers, replacement tools, and procedures to enable crew to perform quick replacements in emergencies.
Air Filters: Inspect every 1000 hours, replace every 2000 hours (short-haul coastal vessels may reduce to 1500 hours).
Fuel Filters: Replace every 1500–2000 hours for heavy fuel oil main engines; every 800 hours for diesel auxiliary engines.
Seawater Filters: Inspect backwash function monthly; replace filter screens every 6 months.
Shut off relevant system valves and drain residual media (fuel, lube oil).
Ensure proper fit of sealing gaskets when installing new elements to avoid leakage.
After replacement, run the system under no-load for 5 minutes to purge air.
